As I explained in a recent blog post, Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions’ Business Intelligence service is all about turning the data we collect into useful information that can provide insight and generate cost savings for our customers.
Of course, that all begins with collecting the data, on everything from the amount of time your vehicles spend being serviced to the number of breakdowns they suffer. But it doesn’t end there. Those numbers don’t speak for themselves – and that’s where our experts come in.
We provide all our customers with their fleets’ vital statistics via a simple online portal: Capital View. Every aspect of your fleet – spending, downtime, compliance – gets its own section, bringing the various relevant metrics together in one place. Rather than simply presenting them as an off-putting and impenetrable string of numbers, though, we use graphs, tables and infographics to bring those metrics to life and provide real insight.
The simple philosophy that guides our presentation of information is that, if it’s done well, you shouldn’t need a degree in statistics to understand what the data is telling you. As David McCandless, author of Information is Beautiful, said: ‘By visualizing information, we turn it into a landscape that you can explore with your eyes, a sort of information map. And when you’re lost in information, an information map is kind of useful.’
Our specially-designed reporting systems put such ‘information maps’ in your hands. This, for example, is the dashboard that a customer might see when they log in to Capital View:
The fleet’s key performance indicators are presented together – in green if they meet the required target, and red if they fall short. That way, you can see at a single glance how the fleet is doing. It’s simple and intuitive: more green is good, more red is bad. Similarly, large arrows show how unit costs are changing. Again, green is good: it means costs are falling.
Sometimes you need to go beyond the headline figures, which is why our monthly updates provide detailed breakdowns for each main area of fleet management, summarised on pages like this:
As you can see, we use bar charts to show how each indicator has changed over time. In this case, for example, we can clearly see that many more tyres were replaced in February and March than in the preceding months. Summary statistics are shown clearly (99.3% availability, for example), but always with enough detail to put them in context (1,457 days lost to downtime).
These are just a few examples of how we present the wealth of data that underpins our Business Intelligence service. It’s all about taking the raw numbers and using them to generate real insights into your fleet. And the bespoke analytics we produce for our Strategic Partners take that a step further, with reports tailored to the customer’s requirements and objectives to answer specific questions they may have.
