Company car users and car leasing contract owners may wish to take on board advice from Protyre - a provider of vehicle tyres - and avoid driving over potholes.

According to the organisation, 300 new potholes are being identified in Britain each day, with each one potentially causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage to tyres and suspension.

The recent cold snap has triggered the surge in the number of potholes on the country's roads.

Car leasing scheme users may be among the worst affected, with the risk to fleets often multiplied because of the number of vehicles they run.

Duncan McClure Fisher, managing director at Potholes.co.uk, says: "We know that the average repair cost of axle and suspension damage caused by hitting a pothole is £360."

The significant amount of snow which fell in February 2009 created a 40% rise in the number of potholes and a 250% increase in the amount of insurance claims made as a result of the hazards, said the AA.ADNFCR-1627-ID-19619380-ADNFCR
