Fleet solutions bosses who have recently agreed a commercial contract hire programme may wish to invest time and cash in a new risk management strategy to deal with the increasing threat posed by potholes.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is warning that potholes could cost British drivers £320m, with more and more starting to show following the recent icy weather.

Neil Greig, IAM's director of policy and research, issues advice which may be of interest to fleet solutions managers, saying: "As well as worrying about your vehicle, with potholes being a major cause of suspension failure, drivers should be particularly conscious of cyclists and motorcyclists trying to get past a pothole."

Some tips that bosses may wish to pass on to their fleet drivers include leaving a safe distance to the car in front and, if a pothole is hit, stopping immediately to check tyres.

Last year the IAM issued a similar warning, claiming Britain's roads were "rife" with potholes.ADNFCR-1627-ID-19571477-ADNFCR
