Commercial vehicle professionals offered wheel security guide

Commercial vehicle hire professionals could benefit from a new guide when looking to improve their risk management procedures.
According to Transport Research Laboratory figures, almost 400 incidents occurred in 2006 where wheels came away from lorries - and the Freight Transport Association aims to reduce this number.
The latter group explained that Wheel Security: A Best Practice Guide publication is designed with the fleet solutions industry in mind and offers hints and tips on ensuring these accidents do not happen.
A number of sector commentators have discussed the move, with SITA UK's fleet compliance and auditing manager Mark Forster noting the importance of having such information to hand.
"The guide's advice goes to the heart of road safety standards, therefore helping to protect a company's O-licence," he added.
Martyn Edwards, technical service advisor for ATS Euromaster, also welcomed the launch of the booklet, stating: "Maintenance staff must be correctly trained to recognise the signs of component wear and damage."
This week also saw the dangers of buying part-worn tyres highlighted by mytres.co.uk, which warned motorists that delaying the purchase of new treads was a risky business.
