A quarter of company car drivers have never checked whether their vehicle is likely to offer sufficient grip in wet conditions, it has been revealed.

Research by TyreSafe found one in four people who get behind the wheel for business purposes have not tested tread depth once.

A further 41 per cent admitted it had been more than six months since they last conducted this aspect of car maintenance.

TyreSafe warned that people who neglect these checks may be breaking the law and risking serious injury.

Chairman Stuart Jackson also pointed out firms have a duty of care to their employees and should ensure their workers' vehicles are roadworthy.

He stated: "As part of their health and safety obligations, companies should make sure that drivers understand their own individual responsibility towards tyre checks."

Earlier this month, another survey by TyreSafe revealed motorists in the north-west of England and East Anglia are the worst culprits in the UK when it comes to neglecting these important vehicle parts.
