Companies looking to improve their risk management strategies may be well advised to make sure drivers look after their keys.

According to auto recovery firm Tracker, 74 per cent of the stolen vehicles it finds have not suffered a forced entry.

It explained it is much more common for thieves to take keys first before driving away in someone else's car or truck.

During the first six months of 2009, Tracker recovered almost £12 million worth of vehicles.

The company pointed out criminals were taking a range of different autos, not just high-value machines.

Managing director Bill Raynal stated: "This makes it more important than ever that people protect themselves from thieves and that means thinking about keeping their keys safe at all times."

Earlier this year, Tracker was able to recover two Mercedes hidden in the back of a lorry because one was fitted with Very High Frequency technology.
