Fleet bosses keen to improve their risk management strategies may want to be even more vigilant about tyre checks during the coming months, if the comments of one driving group are anything to go by.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), as autumn takes hold and the weather starts to become wetter, it is vital these important vehicle parts are in peak condition.

The group explained worn tyres can increase the chances of skidding and subsequent road accidents.

Head of technical advice Tim Shallcross stated: "As tyres have only the area of the sole of your shoe in touch with the road at any one time, it's a safety no-brainer to keep them in top condition."

Figures provided by IAM show when tread depth falls below 0.5 mm, the likelihood of skidding increases seven-fold.

This comes after TyreSafe claimed the pressure of these vital vehicle parts should be checked on a monthly basis.
