Fleets driving through London this summer should prepare for a significant increase in congestion.
Core routes are expected to slow to just 12mph and congestion will rise by 33% during late July and early August, according to Inrix's UK Summer Traffic Predictions.
The first three days of the event are predicted to generate the highest levels of traffic trouble, with the Olympic opening ceremony on 27 July clashing with one of the busiest holiday getaway weekends of the year, in which traffic levels are already 30% above average.
Greg Hallsworth, lead scientist and traffic analyst at Inrix, explained that with "nearly 100,000 ticket-holders" expected at the opening ceremony, "tens of thousands of visitors anticipated at the live sites", and "thousands of closed roads for the Men's Road Cycling event", there will be a "huge stress" placed on the capital's road networks.
The degree to which chaos will occur was evident in August 2011, when a trial event for the Men's Road Cycling race took place.
It was reported that journeys of just a few miles took hours and drivers were forced to abandon their cars.
Hauliers have also been warned that costs will rise in and around London during the Olympic period, as more trucks and staff will be needed to meet business requirements.
