One industry body has commented on recently announced plans to improve parking facilities for commercial contract hire customers and fleet solutions providers.

According to the Road Haulage Association (RHA), the Department for Transport's initiative to boost quality and help introduce more rest-stop facilities for lorry drivers is a welcome one.

The group said that the Action Plan would not find an "easy, quick fix", but the fact that there is now progress being made is positive news for the industry as a whole.

RHA director of policy Jack Semple said: "Minister Paul Clark's recognition of the current shortage, commitment for the future and emphasis on the need to work actively with local authorities gives the political direction and lead that is needed."

He added that his own organisation would continue to work with officials wherever possible to help address the issue and would also support the new government scheme.

The RHA recently announced that Peter Cullum, its head of international affairs, would represent the fleet solutions industry in his new role as vice-president of the Goods Transport Council of the International Road Transport Union.
