Green fleet managers 'need time to adhere to rule changes'

Green fleet managers will need more time to implement changes in their processes, it has been suggested.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), tough new proposals from the European Commission to reduce the carbon footprint of vans and trucks will need to be introduced carefully.
The industry body said that during a time of economic uncertainty, it was important that fleet managers are not forced into implementing changes that they were not financially equipped for.
Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, said that such vehicles form an important part of the UK and European economy and many businesses do not have the immediate funds available to make significant alterations to how they operate.
"In the current economic climate, the EU regulation must maintain the sectors diversity while encouraging innovation and the move to low carbon models," he added.
The SMMT revised its new car registration forecast for the year earlier this month, taking into account the impact of the government scrappage scheme.
