An increasing number of commercial vehicle operators are being tempted back into the showrooms as the government's vehicle scrappage scheme continues to prove a success, new figures have revealed.

The impact of the initiative has been clear in the car market, accounting for almost ten per cent of new vehicle registrations over the course of the past month.

However, new statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have shown that the scheme is also beginning to have a positive effect on commercial vehicle sales.

The organisation revealed that 323 vans were registered under the scheme in June as fleet managers sought to take advantage of the offer by adding to their range of vehicles.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: "The scrappage incentive scheme is working well and has encouraged a lot more people back into showrooms."

According to the Retail Motor Industry, the full impact of the initiative will not be felt until a few months down the line when customers begin to take delivery of their new vehicles, as the volume of orders is translated into sales.ADNFCR-1627-ID-19251460-ADNFCR
