Fleet operators and commercial vehicle drivers are being urged to have their say on proposals for a new testing system for drivers of lorries and other vehicles which tow trailers.

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has unveiled a number of planned improvements to the existing test, which are designed to make it more representative of real-life conditions.

Rather than being tested in vehicles that do not carry a load, learner lorry drivers would have to drive with lorries and trailers that are of a similar weight to that which candidates would use on the roads.

The proposed changes would also bring the UK in line with European testing regulations and the DSA's chief executive Rosemary Thew is keen to hear the views of those in the industry.

"I hope everyone with an interest in the industry will take the time to respond to this consultation - we want you to help shape the way this is introduced," she said.

The announcement comes after the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association last week launched a new online manual offering tips to all HGV and company car drivers designed to keep them safe on the road.ADNFCR-1627-ID-19214326-ADNFCR
