Businesses across the UK continue to hold off adding to their commercial vehicle fleets as a result of the uncertain financial climate, it would seem.
According to the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), new van and truck registrations plummeted further in May as the market continues to struggle.
The number of new truck sales dropped by 44 per cent during the course of the month, while van registrations were down by over 50 per cent.
SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said that despite signs that consumer confidence is improving, UK van and truck companies are still restricted by the difficult economic climate.
"Businesses across the economy remain cautious about their future prospects and it will take a little while for improving confidence to register in the marketplace," he added.
The gloomy market outlook comes despite an upturn in the overall automotive industry in the UK brought about by the introduction of the government's car scrappage scheme.
Mr Everitt added that the initial impact of the scrappage scheme has seen "an encouraging start", having helped generate 35,000 new car orders since it came into effect.
