Consumers are very interested in the government's new car scrappage scheme, according to a new poll.

Research by Motoring.co.uk revealed that the initiative has led to an increase in the number of people looking for new cars in recent weeks.

This, it said, is despite the findings of some surveys which suggested that interest in the scrappage scheme was minimal.

According to Peter Gerrard, an expert at Motoring.co.uk, much of this interest is centring on more environmentally friendly vehicles.

He commented: "It's encouraging to see that a surprising number of people have been searching for a more economical replacement."

Mr Gerrard added that the car scrappage scheme could potentially be a "shot in the arm" for the motoring industry.

However, the Association of British Drivers has dismissed the policy as a "cynical government ploy".

The organisation said this is because many of those who are driving in eligible vehicles - cars aged over ten years old - are only doing do because they cannot afford to buy a new one.
