When looking for a new van, fleets are being advised to consider fuel economy.
Sam Knowlton, co-founder of CourierPros.com, explained that when selecting a new vehicle "the three most important factors are fuel economy, fuel economy and fuel economy."
Even for vans that will only end up with 200,000 miles on the clock, if drivers average 15mpg they are still consuming 13,300 gallons of fuel, he said.
With many vans actually reaching 350,000 to 400,000 miles or more, "fuel expense quickly becomes the largest component of the vehicle's overall cost".
Driving style is also important to improve fuel efficiency, even when driving a low-carbon vehicle.
According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), drivers must keep vehicles moving as long as possible and stick to the speed limit to ensure maximum efficiency.
Removing unnecessary weight, keeping vehicles well maintained, and ensuring windows are clean to prevent the build up of moisture, which requires the use of heating and air conditioning, are also important.
