A project to ensure the UK is positioned for the commercial roll-out of Ultra Low Carbon Vehicles has been announced.
UKH2Mobility will evaluate the potential for hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles in Britain and will develop a plan for the introduction of the cars, Business minister Mark Prisk announced.
"The UK is proving itself to be a key early market for ultra-low emission vehicles with growing numbers of electric and plug-in hybrids appearing on our roads," he stated.
A consortium of 13 automotive companies, government organisations and energy companies will consider the steps required to ensure that Britain is at the forefront of the hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle revolution.
The government has also invested £400 million to support the development and deployment of Ultra Low Carbon Vehicles.
Paul Everitt, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, has welcomed the scheme, claiming that it is vital for the sustainability of the automotive industry.
