Companies signed up to business car leasing contracts made "impressive progress" in reducing carbon emissions last year, according to new research.

Car fleet users and firms with business car leasing in place contributed to a fall of about 4% in emissions, equating to 144 g/km, the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) stated.

BVRLA chief executive John Lewis said: "The government's emissions-based tax regime has given fleets and their drivers a great incentive to drive cleaner cars and the message is clearly getting through."

Car leasing users also recorded a 2% decrease in the average number of miles completed during 2009 - which may also be beneficial to the environment.

The results could back up the popular theory that green fleets are becoming the new stereotype for car leasing firms, as opposed to gas-guzzling polluters.

Research conducted this week by the Department for Transport revealed that the majority of people believe businesses have a responsibility to run green fleets.ADNFCR-1627-ID-19588090-ADNFCR
