Due to what the Freight Transport Association (FTA) describes as a lack of "any meaningful progress" at last month's Copenhagen climate summit, the freight industry has decided to debate how to record and reduce its carbon emissions itself.
The FTA is now leading a new scheme designed to benchmark current emissions and map out future strategies.
Some of the FTA's most influential members - with more than 23,000 vehicles in their fleets between them - have backed the scheme, entitled the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme.
It will record, report and reduce carbon emissions from the freight transport industry.
Stewart Oades, president of the FTA, said: "There is a real will within the industry to take responsibility for its impact on the environment and FTA members already invest millions in cleaner and greener engines."
The FTA this week released its 48th annual guidebook on road transport law, which could help freight solutions bosses run their vehicles within the rules.
