Green fleet bosses may agree that the best way for companies to minimise their impact on the environment is to look at the way vehicles are used.

Professor Alan McKinnon - head of the Logistics Research Centre at Heriot-Watt University - recently suggested too much emphasis is placed on truck technology instead of operational efficiency.

The academic made these comments at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders' (SMMT) commercial vehicle web seminar.

He claimed the government's target of reducing CO2 emissions by 34 per cent by 2020 is unrealistic, especially if there is too much reliance on new technological developments rather than focusing on the way trucks are utilised.

Professor McKinnon concluded that cutting the environmental impact of road freight requires concerted action in a wide range of areas.

In other news, SMMT recently reported that truck and van registrations in the UK fell by 40 per cent in July - compared with the same month in 2008.
