FTA comments on green fleet management
The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has commented on a recent approach to road pricing and said the sector takes its environmental obligations seriously.
Green fleet investments are often put on hold when hauliers are taxed with fuel duty, said the organisation's director of policy James Hookham.
He explained that the logistics industry seems to be regarded by the government as a "cash cow" that loses any ability to stay competitive in a financial downturn.
But given the chance, it would invest in greener vehicles.
"It is time for all political parties to be honest about the taxes they intend to levy and to stop hiding behind greenwash," Mr Hookham concluded.
One of the issues on the transport select committee's agenda when it delivered proposals for new road pricing was the comparison between charges paid by UK freight operators and their foreign counterparts.
The agenda also covered whether the current charging structure relates to HGV road use - it said there was widespread agreement it does not.
