New government scheme 'to accelerate move towards green driving'
Green fleet operators looking for a practical alternative to some of the gas-guzzling motors currently on the market may welcome a new £25 million scheme to increase the delivery of low-carbon vehicles.
The government has awarded the funding to the winners of the Technology Strategy Board's (TSB) Ultra Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator competition.
Manufacturers and companies which showed their potential to take low-carbon technology to new levels will share the money in a bid to accelerate the introduction of greener driving in the UK.
The programme is designed to bring together the motor industry, power companies and the public sector to increase the development of environmentally-friendly vehicles.
Paul Everitt, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, said the commitment would provide a welcome boost for the sector.
"Ultra-low carbon vehicles are now mainstream business for the UK motor industry and the TSB's competition provides the ideal incentive to develop and demonstrate new technologies," he stated.
UK manufacturer Ford, which is included in the list of TSB winners, recently announced the launch of its new Transit Econetic model, which it claimed is ideal for commercial vehicle operators looking to reduce emissions and save on costs.
