'Industry-wide push needed' to encourage greener motoring
Green fleet operators across the UK may be taking the right steps to help cut carbon emissions and improve efficiency, but much more must be done to tackle climate change, it has been claimed.
Steve Howard, chief executive officer of The Climate Group, said it will take an industry-wide effort to help encourage the uptake of more efficient and environmentally-friendly vehicles.
Responding to the launch of a new database this week that allows fleet managers and consumers to compare van models according to their CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, Mr Howard said driver knowledge is "a valuable effort" in the fight against climate change.
However, he said this would not be enough to help instigate a large-scale switch towards greener motoring in the UK.
"We need far deeper transformational change across the whole of our motor and transport industry to move away from expensive, polluting fossil fuels and towards clean green hybrid and electric vehicle technology," Mr Howard insisted.
According to the Department of Transport, vans currently make up around 15 per cent of road transport emissions in the country, a rate which is rising faster than that of any other vehicle.
