The government needs to do more to encourage green fleet operators and individual motorists to purchase eco-friendly cars.

At least that is the opinion of TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk, which has claimed that the high cost of hybrid and electric vehicles is hindering the growth of the sector.

This comes after a poll conducted by the website revealed that 33 per cent of would-be buyers have been put off in the past because the price difference between green cars and regular models is too steep.

As a result, editor of the website Faye Sunderland commented that a government-backed grant should be applied to any vehicle that meets emission targets below 90 g/km of carbon dioxide.

"This would provide a real stimulus to the uptake of highly efficient cars," she explained.

Despite this, electric car trader evstores recently reported a rise in the number of motorists expressing interest in its vehicles, owing to the fact they cost nothing to tax.
