Lightning Car Company (LCC), a British electric car manufacturer, has announced that it is confident it will be able to sell its new electric car despite last month's announcement that the UK is currently in recession.

LCC received a great deal of praise at last year's British Motor Show for its £125,000 car, named Lightning.

Lightning would sell despite the recession, the company told the Financial Times, because it is aimed at a niche market of upmarket car buyers, and its zero-emissions claim will ensure it remains desirable in both good and bad economic times.

Ruari McGirr, chief executive of St Helens, the finance advisor raising £2 million for LCC, told the newspaper: "Lightning epitomises the enduring ability of British engineering to innovate and adapt in the face of new technology and the changing needs of consumers."

The announcement that the company would continue marketing its car no doubt comes as a boost to the confidence of car fleet managers across the country, following the cancellation of two British car shows this year.

The government recently announced that it would be making £2.3 billion available in loans to car manufacturers, for investment in green technology.

Such a boost to the green car industry in the UK could have serious and lasting benefits to the choices available to car fleet managers hoping to economically reduce their company's emissions.
