The scrappage scheme has not inspired businesses to replace their company cars, it has been claimed.

According to ACFO, the government initiative has failed to provide much-needed help to British fleet operators during the recession.

It made this statement in light of recent figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders that show there has been a significant decline in the number of new cars and vans bought by firms this year.

Director Stewart Whyte said: "The scheme has done absolutely nothing to encourage businesses to renew their company cars and vans."

He added private buyers have been the only group to benefit from the cash for bangers initiative.

Mr Whyte also pointed out it is hard for green fleet bosses to help the country's leaders meet CO2 reduction targets when they cannot afford to replace old vehicles with more fuel-efficient models.

In other news, ACFO recently called on the government to compile accurate data on driving-related duty of care failings by public and private sector organisations.
