The AA has praised the chancellor for including a scrappage scheme in his budget.
The motoring group celebrated Alistair Darling's decision to include a deal offering £2,000 for owners of cars registered before 31st July 1999.
Granted to owners who trade in their car in order to buy a new model, the £2,000 will be made up of £1,000 from the government and the same amount offered from the car manufacturer.
Edmund King, AA president, said: "Drivers will be delighted that a scrappage scheme has been given the green light, however, motorists will be furious that he has landed a fuel duty bombshell to pay for it.
"The AA first raised the scrappage issue with Downing Street last September so we are pleased that a scheme has finally been given the go ahead."
A scrappage scheme should benefit both manufacturers and private car owners in the short-term but in the long run it is likely the deal will prop up the ailing automotive industry, leading to more opportunities to invest in greener technology.
