Fleet operators could do more to cut the costs associated with accidents caused by their own drivers, it had been claimed.

New research by Total Accident Management (TAM) found that fleet managers could be throwing away as much as £424 for every single accident which was the fault of their staff.

Giving an assessment that will be of significant interest to risk management firms, the company found that a typical 1,000-vehicle fleet could save up to £80,000 a year.

That cost reduction would be almost entirely achieved by more closely overseeing third party vehicle charges - something that TAM sales manager Jon Pritchard said many operators fail to do.

"When a corporate driver has an accident and is at fault, resolving the issue with the third party and their insurer is often a costly, unwelcome and time consuming activity," he commented.

"A positive outcome can be achieved from getting the driver and their car back on the road much more quickly at a cost of almost half that when managed by an independent service provider."
