The fuel economy of cars is the thing drivers bear in mind the most when selecting a new vehicle, new research has suggested.
Nearly two-thirds of UK motorists cite fuel economy as being their number one priority when buying a new car, according to the latest research by Motorpoint.
The car-seller found that 64 per cent of people regard fuel economy as the most important consideration when changing their vehicle - one of the strongest signs yet that surging fuel costs are taking their toll on drivers' finances.
Last month the cost of oil rose to an all-time high of $135.09 (£68.85) per barrel, and even now it remains above the $120 mark.
Alluding to the gravity of the situation in the current economic climate, David Shelton, managing director of Motorpoint, said the findings of the new study should come as little surprise to the industry.
He commented: "With petrol prices increasing almost by the day, it is little wonder that fuel economy has become the number one concern for car buyers."
