New advice has emerged that could help fleet solutions professionals and business car leasing customers stay safe this winter.

Total explained that as an estimated 7,000 cars fall victim to a breakdown every day in the UK, it can be important to protect against potential problems as the weather gets a bit colder.

This is due to the fact that vehicles take longer to warm up in the milder months, while oil is slower to circulate and car batteries can suffer from poor recharging.

"Preparing your car in advance can make it easier than having to deal with trying to get a cold car started or even calling for road side assistance once winter has set in," it explained.

Using advanced fuels that include additives and detergents was recommended, as was making sure relevant oils and lubricants are on board.

In addition, regular checks on bodywork, tyres, water, windscreens and lights were suggested as a good idea.

Total issued a study in August that showed 95 per cent of people in the UK would brave the milder British summer in favour of heading abroad.
