Company car drivers are unlikely to ditch their vehicles in order to travel to work on public transport, despite being resigned to a future of congested roads and motorways, a survey has shown.

According to a report by the RAC Foundation and market research company Ipsos Mori, more than half of all motorists would rather risk being held up in a traffic jam than catch the train or bus.

While 61 per cent of road users see congestion rising during the next five years, most remain unconvinced about the alternatives to driving to work.

Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, said: "People are reliant on their cars and although there is widespread support for improvements in public transport, only a minority say they would switch to it in the near future."

The study also showed more than four in five drivers would struggle to adapt to life without their cars.

According to research by Continental Tyres published earlier this month, the average motorist spends 45 minutes on the road each day.ADNFCR-1627-ID-19288981-ADNFCR
