Company car drivers have been warned not to risk their livelihood for the sake of one quiet drink in the sun.

Road transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick last week announced a new crackdown on motorists in a bid to tackle the problem of drink driving during the summer.

But according to Morning after Breathalyser manufacturer AlcoSense, even those who think they are safe to drive could end up facing prosecution.

A study by the company revealed that 96 per cent of respondents underestimated the number of units of alcohol supplied by a pint of lager or a 250 ml glass of wine.

Indeed, many thought the drinks contained just half the alcoholic content they actually did, meaning drivers could be putting themselves and others at risk by unknowingly taking to the road while over the limit.

According to the Department for Transport, the problem of drink driving is just as prevalent during the summer months as it is at Christmas, with as many as 200 motorists killed in accidents where alcohol is a contributory factor.ADNFCR-1627-ID-19198319-ADNFCR
