Fleets warned over breakdown safety
A new campaign has been launched to help fleet operators educate their drivers on how to be safe in the event of a breakdown.
Organised by road safety charity Brake, the campaign is designed to inform fleet drivers about how to avoid breakdowns "wherever possible" as well as what to do if one does occur.
It has been launched via Brake's Fleet Safety Forum and is being started off with an information pack.
Roz Cumming, fleet safety forum manager at Brake, asserted that the campaign will be beneficial for fleets because while many drivers know what to do when they breakdown, many of them still do potentially dangerous things such as wait on the hard shoulder.
She said: "Companies have a responsibility to ensure their drivers and other road users are protected in the event that a breakdown occurs. Avoiding crashes not only saves lives but makes commercial sense too."
According to Brake, 117 people were either injured or killed in 2007 while waiting in a vehicle parked on the hard shoulder.
