The closure of carriageways on the Severn Bridge for the cables that support the structure to be checked could cause disruption to traffic in the coming weeks.

Users of commercial vehicle hire services might want to make sure that their drivers are aware of the closures - and exactly when they are due to take place.

According to the Highways Agency, a permanent closure of one lane westbound is due to be enforced throughout the work, which could last until October 2010.

From April 12th, further closures are expected at weekends, when large gantries will need to be installed to permit inspections to be made.

Project manager Chris Pope says: "While contractors are working on the cables it will be necessary to reduce the bridge to single-lane running and use a temporary speed limit of 50 mph."

Commercial vehicle hire customers in the region, whose fleet uses the bridge regularly, may want to plan around the closures to ensure their business is not affected.

Firms with large car leasing contracts could find the Highways Agency is able to liaise with them directly in order to prevent disruption to their fleet.

Organisations with more than 500 employees, as well as companies in certain industries, are offered free traffic updates from the Agency and real-time guidance on the condition of the nation's trunk roads and motorway network.ADNFCR-1627-ID-19624312-ADNFCR
