Companies should make sure that vehicles which are part of their commercial contract hire programme are not overloaded as this could create a risk of them overturning, according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Spot checks will take place on hundreds of vehicles - which could include HGVs making up part of a commercial contract hire scheme - in the coming weeks, with the aim of ensuring no lorry or truck is travelling with an illegal load.
Unsafe loads cause more than 1,200 injuries each year and cost firms millions of pounds, the organisation states.
Fleet solutions bosses may wish to consider the words of Peter Brown, from the HSE, who says: "Vehicles are at risk of overturning if a load moves and makes them unstable. Load shifts can also put those workers who are unloading the van or lorry at the other end at risk."
When it comes to selecting a driver for HGVs, fleet owners may wish to opt for older people after recent research by the Institute of Advanced Motorists showed them to be safer than younger road users.
