Wheel safety fleet solutions could be on the agenda for managers this winter, after the publication of a guide that could assist in commercial vehicle management.
The Freight Transport Association (FTA) created what it has described as "comprehensive" advice on the subject, after a study by the Transport Research Laboratory found that in 2006 there were almost 400 wheel losses from lorries.
Andy Mair is head of policy at the FTA and said wheel security was a crucial element of any commercial vehicle strategy.
"This comprehensive guide, which is aimed at both maintenance staff and drivers, will help reduce the risk of wheel loosening, or worse still, wheel loss," he added.
In addition to the FTA's work on the booklet, help on the publication was given by groups including ATS Euromaster and the Institute of Road Transport Engineers.
Earlier this month, another guide was launched to help commercial vehicle operators deal with agency drivers.
The FTA, which published the information, said it included advice on risk management and legal obligations, among other subjects.
