The government should make more of an investment in green technologies, including green fleets, before considering increasing fuel costs.
According to Used Car Expert, nearly 7,000 people have signed its petition against the proposed two pence rise in petrol and diesel.
Such an expense could impact on company cars and fleet drivers. Indeed, 74 per cent of respondents to the magazines recent poll said the hike in fuel duty is a "serious concern".
This worry was particularly felt by businesses and motorists on who rely on cars for their livelihoods.
Commenting on the potential increase, which is due to be imposed next week, Matthew Tumbridge, editor of the publication, said: "The government needs to start putting a much higher percentage of the existing revenue from fuel into green technology development before they can justify any more increases."
Research conducted by uSwitch.com stated the fuel duty rise will cost British drivers a cumulative £1 billion by September 2011.
It is thought some £35 million more will be spent on petrol and diesel in the next month alone.
