Commercial vans could soon come under new laws limiting their speed, potentially increasing their operating costs, it has been suggested.
Laws stating that commercial vans over 3.5 tonnes should be fitted with tachographs and a speed limiter could soon come into effect for vans weighing 3.5 tonnes or less, the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has said.
Robin Dickeson, manager of commercial vehicle issues at the SMMT, said: "Although there are no definite plans at the moment to require vans of 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight and under to carry tachographs and speed limiters, it is being talked about in EU circles and I believe it is a case of when, not if.
"It could be here in five years or so."
With a slower top speed limit vans will be able to make fewer journeys on a daily basis, which could increase operating costs for businesses which have to buy more vehicles and employ more staff to keep up with the rate at which the company had been operating.
