The cost of running a commercial vehicle fleet will rise significantly as a result of new fee hikes from the Department for Transport (DfT), the Freight Transport Authority (FTA) has claimed.
Coming ahead of the 1.84p per litre rise in fuel duty, the DfT's rise in fees could create serious difficulty for commercial fleet operators, the DfT said, leading to higher running costs and the possibility that jobs will be lost.
The FTA's Jo Tanner said: "Those working within the transport sector are already bearing the brunt of the recession.
"Now the government, which says it wants to support British industry, is kicking us while we're down by imposing these fee increases and duty hikes."
With the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency fees, for instance, to rise by nine per cent, the FTA claimed that commercial fleet operators will be faced with an extra charge of around £1,500 per truck.
Criticising the DfT for "sleeping on the job", Ms Tanner added that the rises in the fees incurred by commercial fleet operators are a failure by the DfT in their role in monitoring such costs.
