Highways Agency chief executive, Graham Dalton, has opened a new £40 million dual carriageway in West Cumbria, taking the pressure of several villages nearby.

Among the 17,000 other vehicles which use the A595 daily, freight vehicles will now be able to benefit from the dual carriageway which will reduce chances of traffic congestion and could reduce journey times between Parton and Lillyhall.

The new bypass, which had been under construction for two years, will now mean that several thousand vehicles will be able to avoid using a single lane road through the villages of Distington, Common End and Howgate.

Speaking at the opening of the bypass, Mr Dalton said: "The new road takes traffic away from the tight bends, junctions and accesses, improving safety and making journeys more reliable by reducing delays.

"These improvements are benefitting all road users, helping boost the economy, as well as restoring communities in the villages along the old road."

Transport minister Andrew Adonis said that he welcomed the opening, adding that the government is committed to tackling congestion and increasing road safety.
