Car fleet operators could take the advice of a road safety organisation which has warned that many motorists are "scarily complacent" about the maintenance of their brakes and tyres.
A survey by Brake has revealed that 42 per cent of car and van drivers admit to driving with a malfunction or dangerous defect within the last year.
Driving with tyres in poor condition - through cracks, worn tread and low pressure - is thought to be one of the most common mistakes made, which could be a reminder for fleet owners to check their vehicles' tyres.
Mary Williams OBE, chief executive of Brake, said: "Drivers seem to be placing far too much reliance on their annual MOT and passively relying on their garage to tell them when to replace components, rather than asking questions about level of wear."
Vehicles which are part of a fleet could be in more regular use, meaning brake pads and discs could fall into disrepair more rapidly than in normal circumstances.
Protyre recently suggested that car owners should regularly check tyres for signs of wear and tear.
