Company car drivers who take part in a programme aimed at teaching eco-friendlier motoring could be able to use BMWs or MINIs as part of their training.

The two manufacturers recently announced they are teaming up with the Energy Saving Trust to provide a fleet of cars for the Smarter Driving course, which is administered by DriveSense.

It intends to help employers ensure their workers know how to complete journeys as efficiently as possible, therefore leaving a smaller carbon footprint and minimising expenditure.

Up to £250 per person per year on fuel is expected to be saved.

"We are delighted to be part of a scheme which benefits not only the drivers but their employers and the wider environment too," said Stephen Chater, BMW Group corporate operations manager.

"BMW Group fleet promises to offer participants a dynamic and engaging experience."

Various eco-driving tips often given by campaign groups include accelerating gently and choosing models equipped with start-stop technology.
