People responsible for the maintenance of their firm's company cars could help avoid expensive repair bills by making sure they use the right engine oil, it has been suggested.

According to Castrol, it is vital vehicle owners use the most appropriate product for their particular make and model.

It claimed failing to do so could cause mechanical problems that can cost up to £5,000 to fix.

The company made these comments as it launched an initiative in London to offer drivers a helping hand.

Roadside traffic cameras have been set up that can recognise the make and model of passing cars by their registration numbers.

After autos have been identified, a billboard further down the street then flashes up the most appropriate oil for the vehicle in question.

Quentin Willson, automotive expert, praised the scheme.

"I can't emphasise enough how important it is to use the right oil for your car and I love the idea of reaching motorists whilst they are actually driving their cars," he said.

Previously, Castrol reported 18 per cent of breakdowns are caused by engine faults.
