Fleet operators and company car drivers will be offered greater protection when it comes to the maintenance and repair of their vehicles as a result of the new Motor Industry Code of Practice, it has been claimed.
Consumer affairs minister Gareth Thomas has urged independent garages across the UK to sign up to the code, which is aimed at helping to identify reliable and responsible operators within the sector.
The Retail Motor Industry Federation claimed the move is "great news" for both consumers and the industry as a whole, helping to improve standards of repair and maintenance across the country.
A spokesman for the organisation said: "[The code] promotes and safeguards the interests of consumers by helping them identify subscribing businesses and providing an easily accessible and robust dispute resolution mechanism, should it be necessary."
This comes after Chris Mason, director of Motor Codes, also welcomed the introduction of the code, which he insisted will help improve motorists' confidence in the service and repair industry.
