Drivers ignored the drink driving warnings over the festive period, new figures reveal.
Data released by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) shows that some 7,124 drivers were arrested during the December crack-down across England and Wales.
This represented 4.55 per cent of those who were breathalysed across all age groups.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has announced that it is disappointed that such a large number of drivers chose to put themselves and others at risk by drink driving.
Kevin Clinton, RoSPA's head of road safety, commented: "It is extremely disappointing but sadly not surprising that, despite three decades of drink-drive education and enforcement, thousands of drivers were caught drinking and driving in just one month."
However, road safety charity Brake has applauded police efforts during the Christmas period to prevent people from drink driving. Nonetheless, more needs to be done by the government to prevent more incidents occurring, they claim.
