With the government aiming to set stricter criteria for whiplash compensation claims, drivers are being advised to take preventative measures to avoid accidents.

Simon Elstow, head of training at the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) Drive and Survive, explained that the rise in compensation claims is driving up the cost of insurance.

Consequently, the IAM has issued a series of steps for motorists to follow to avoid cases of whiplash and protect insurance premiums.

Firstly, drivers should maintain a good distance in front so it is possible to slow down gently.

People should also look in the mirror before braking to avoid being hit from behind and adjust head restraints properly.

Anticipating traffic in front will prevent any unnecessary stops and signalling for junctions will give traffic around you time to react.

IAM also advocates keeping a foot lightly on the brake as traffic approaches from behind to ensure that they see brake lights.

Last year alone 432,000 people in the UK made whiplash claims - one in every 140 Britons.ADNFCR-1627-ID-801272684-ADNFCR
