Commercial vehicle hire customers and car fleet operators are contributing towards the £1 million of fuel tax being raked in by the government each day - which the AA is urging Gordon Brown to put towards improving the state of Britain's roads.

The significant sum means that the two million potholes in the UK could be fixed within 100 days if the government diverted funding in their direction.

Edmund King, president of the AA, told the Express: "If nearly 2p a litre from fuel tax was diverted into a pothole fund, for once UK drivers would be seeing their fuel tax disappearing into a black hole they can understand."

Fleet solutions bosses could be disillusioned with the amount they are splashing out on fuel, only to find their commercial hire vehicles and cars are suffering from poor road surfaces.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists last week warned fleet operators to beware of potholes as they can cause significant damage to vehicles.ADNFCR-1627-ID-19582270-ADNFCR
