Company car drivers should ensure they take the necessary steps to prepare for driving in the worst winter weather.

The Co-operative Insurance pointed out weather-related claims on car insurance peak in the first two months of the year, suggesting drivers using company vehicles should take more care in January and February.

Unprepared drivers have already suffered as a result of heavy snow in large parts of the UK in recent weeks, said James Hillon, functional leader at the insurer.

"Preparing for the winter weather doesn't need to be costly or time-consuming," he said, adding that "simple steps" should be taken by drivers to prepare themselves and their vehicles.

Company car drivers should ensure they have de-icer and an ice scraper in their vehicle, as well as an emergency kit with a blanket, torch, water bottle and first aid supplies.

Tyres, lights and wipers should also be checked before setting off on journeys.

Mr Hillon said "common sense and forward planning" are crucial when driving in winter.

Earlier this week, the Met Office issued severe weather warnings for large parts of the UK, with heavy snow expected to cause problems for drivers.
