Company car drivers 'should not skimp on maintenance'
Fleet operators and company car drivers are being urged not to cut corners when it comes to maintaining their vehicles in a bid to beat the recession.
With greater pressure on both business and family finances at present, the British Insurance Brokers' Association is warning people not to avoid essential maintenance in order to reduce costs.
Steve Foulsham, technical services manager at the organisation, said dodging MOTs and putting off necessary work is only likely to lead to greater costs in the long term.
Aside from the prospect of hefty repair bills in the future, tactics such as driving on worn tyres to avoid splashing out on new ones could nullify any insurance cover and leave motorists out of pocket in the event of an accident, he warned.
Mr Foulsham said: "Maintenance is key, just to make sure that you take all reasonable care, which is the cornerstone of any insurance policy."
According to figures released by the British Insurance Brokers' Association, nearly a quarter of brokers have reported customers cutting back on their insurance protection during the downturn in an effort to reduce costs.
