Drivers of car fleets may be targeted by the government in its attempts to reduce the overall number of deaths on the road.

The government has already managed to reduce road deaths to under 3,000 for the first time in 2007, and figures being collated for 2008 already show signs that they may be as low as 2,600, the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (Pacts) has reported.

However, to further reduce the number of deaths on the road to around 1,000 per year, the government will need to tackle organisations which allow employees to drive car fleets, said Roger Bibbings, occupational safety adviser at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa).

Mr Bibbings explained that employers could tackle the issue of road safety as part of existing health and safety precautions offered to employees.

"If employers address this issue as part of mainstream health and safety at work, not only will more workers go home safe at the end of the day but there will be a major drop in road casualty figures," he said.

The government may focus on drivers of car fleets due to the high number of accidents that occur on drives connected to work journeys.
