Accidents caused by foreign lorry drivers are costing the taxpayer more than £50 million each year, new research has suggested.

An estimated 9,800 crashes involving truckers from overseas take place within the UK's borders each year, according to the Accident Exchange claim management group.

It found that a bill of £48.2 million in vehicle repairs is piled up each year due to the incidents, while a further £3.2 million is drained from the economy due to lost working hours.

Even more disturbing was the revelation that 46 per cent of all lorry accidents involving foreign drivers occur at high speed on the nation's motorways.

"The awareness of British drivers to the dangers is just as important if the side-swiping figure is to be reduced," asserted Accident Exchange chief executive Steve Evans. "Too few motorists realise that left-hand drive HGVs are unable to see vehicles overtaking them on the right."

There are approximately 3.5 million motor-related accidents on Britain's roads every year - 0.3 per cent of which are caused by foreign lorries.
